This photo and the following were all taken on or about the
north end of Ellef Ringnes Island in the early 70s. I apologise
for the black and white photos but it was my first camera and I actually
thought of being an artist. Other then the black and white film issue
I was too lazy to take many photos. What a goof!! The photos
are in no particular order at this time.
The dark object near the ridge edge is a person, a jughound
actually.
Most of Ellef Ringnes, or the portions I visited, looked pretty
much like this. A couple of times it was so windy the rocks were moving
or rolling - as much as non-round sharp-edged rocks can roll. It was
more like they being blown quarter or half rolls at a time. Strange
sounds, square rocks rolling - sort of like rocks being dropped. In
one area the camp was in a valley and the surrounding hills appeared to be
shaped by the wind. All the hills were shaped like Hoodoos, made up
of nothing but broken rocks.
A tracked vehicle and workers off to the left.
It was near this area we found a hillside with some grass,
the only time. We stopped and had lunch. While sitting on the
snow we heard some lemmings moving under the snow. The only life we
saw on Ellef Ringnes.
At the time the magnetic North Pole was hundreds of miles
to the south. Even now the magnetic North Pole is situated near the
north end of the island.
